The importance of sustainability within an organization Organizational sustainability within an organization is usually confused by a number of people to mean financial sustainability. This is not accurate as any simple blunder in any department of any organization could lead to its downfall or tarnished image. In essence, sustainability within an organization means the ability of the organizational team to endure both the internal and external pressure to realize their set targets. In layman’s language, we can define it as thriving or survival of an organization (SHRM, 2011). In order to shed more light into the meaning of sustainability, there is need to mention a few primary dimensions of sustainability within an organization. In his Sustainability Champions Guidebook, Willard (2009) discusses these primary dimensions of sustainability. The number one primary dimension of an organizational sustainability is to ensure it has realistic goals and vision. This can be termed as strategic sustainability. This has the advantage of helping the organization to have similar realistic internal activities. In product, services and program sustainability, the organization puts measures to ensure and prove their strong results in whatever they produce. It is for this reason that it is vital for organizations to venture into particular lines and do them perfectly rather than having several ineffective programs. The third sustainability dimension is the personnel sustainability. These are laid down survival strategies to ensure that personnel at the organization perform their duties effectively and reliably. In any organization where the personnel are not trained to do their job well, the output and subsequently the income is usually low. In order to ensure that an organization realize their set goals and target, the personnel must be trained fully and supervised as required. The most important of all is the financial sustainability. As had been mentioned earlier, failure to address any of the above dimensions of the sustainability would lead to symptoms showing up in the organization’s finances. Any organization should ensure they have financial reserves in order to avert any future financial crisis. Doing a contingency planning will also ensure survival of the organization. An organization for instance should put in place plans to deal with any loss or any fall in revenue. Ensuring sustainability within an organization has numerous positive outcomes. The most conspicuous of all is the improved employee/personnel morale. With every measure put in place for the good of organization’s employees, their morale tends to rise. This in turn results into better performances. Sustainability within an organization also produces efficient business processes. This is due to the effective application of all the earlier discussed dimensions of the sustainability. Once an organization sets its strategies right and achieve its set goals and objectives, it stands to gain stronger public image and confidence. This is considered as internal sustainability as this image is good for the products and services of the organization. In discussing the importance of sustainability within an organization, employee loyalty should not be downplayed as this dictates the organization’s productivity. Sustainability within an organization boosts the employee loyalty especially where the personnel sustainability dimension is handled well. This is also linked to the increased employee retention which is achieved as a result of improved human resource management. Internal sustainability of an organization also means a strong financial base. Since money is the propellant of any organization, any sustainability leading to better finances is considered positive. Sustainability within an organization is also considered important as it leads to increased product portfolio, increased productivity of the workforce, increased consumer confidence and increased brand recognition.
